Hello there and welcome to my blog.

My name is Clare and I live in a bayside suburb of Melbourne. Sadly I’m not as close to the beach as I would like to be but I am as close as we can afford at this point in time. I am a mum to 4 adult (I use the term loosely) children, the eldest is 23 and the youngest is 18. My youngest is just about to finish high school with only her exams to go and then she is done. I guess I should be sad that the last of my babies is just about done but I’m not. In fact, I am incredibly excited because I feel as though I am entering into a new phase of my life that is very exciting!

There are a few reasons for starting a blog. The first is that I wanted to document the renovation of our house and be able to share it with family and friends who I perhaps don’t get to see as often as I would like. Secondly, I am a bit of a house addict. In actual fact I am obsessed by renovating, shopping for housey things, spending way to much time on real estate sites, wandering through open inspections of houses I could never possibly afford. I’m pretty sure that I drive my partner up the wall with my constant babble on this topic so this really is a good release for me with minimal pain for him. He isn’t the least bit interested in renovating and in actual fact sees the whole process as a bit of a chore. I know he does love what we have done so far though so I’m not complaining.

The house in question is an old weatherboard “period” stlye house. Not sure what period!! I have lived in this house for about 20 years now and soon after we moved in we did do a little renovating but for one reason and another, nothing ever really got finished. So a couple of years ago the decision was made that we would finish it completely!! We are just about done now and I am really looking forward to sharing some of the things we have done as well as things that inspire me and anything else that develops. Most of the work we have done ourselves except for the bits where a tradie was required and we have had help from a wonderful friend of mine that can do just about anything and has taught me so much.

So I hope you enjoy the blog journey with me. Grab yourself a cuppa (or a wine), sit back and read on…..

  1. Hi Claire! You have a nice house and good taste! I like your simple ideas and great results! Four kids with small age difference – that’s wonderful and makes you a trooper πŸ™‚ Will be coming back to read more posts.

  2. Hi Clare, loved reading your blog today – got the link via the Storybook blog. We are about to submit the DA for our own Storybook (Redgum Manor) so I am super excited to read about someone else’s adventures. Enjoy!

    • Thanks Suzan! Getting everything approved was the most frustrating part. It took such a long time!!! We were grateful that the storybook team were dealing with council as we would have had no idea how to go about it. I hope you get your approvals quickly because then the fun really begins!!

  3. Hi Clare. Also just read your blog. Out of interest, how did you/are you finding the process of being an owner builder? And how do you when and what next in terms of construction?
    Thanks,

    Kate

    • Hi Kate, that’s a great question… Initially it was very overwhelming but once we got going it has been just fine. The team at storybook are incredibly supportive through this and have happily answered all my questions no matter how silly they have been. All of the trades we have used to get to lock up have also been incredibly helpful also. We are now working on finishing the inside which I am very comfortable doing as I have renovated a lot previously. I honestly wouldn’t hesitate to do it again – I have loved every minute and learned so much!

  4. I love your house, you have done a brilliant job. Just wondering if you have any photos of your finished bathroom or ensuite? Also what flooring did you use in the bedroom?

    • Hi Vicki, thank you for your kind words! We have used concrete tiles all thru the down stairs. We live near the beach so need really easy flooring that won’t be damaged by the sand. We haven’t quite finished the bathroom but will post pics soon as we have more updated ones!
      Thanks for visiting!!
